Abstract

Background. The “Humble reports” by governors are one of the most popular historical sources that determines a necessity of studying the experience of its use. This allows to clarify the most controversial aspects of its application in the study of political and socio-economic processes of pre-Soviet Russia. The aim of this work is to analyze stages of studying the Governor’s annual report in the context of historiographical trends in the domestic historical science.
Materials and methods. The research tasks were implemented on the basis of re-search publications on the study of governors’ reports: books, articles, documentary publications, etc. The methodological potential included the following: the systema-tic historical method, which allows us to consider the accumulated body of knowledge on the problem as an interrelated set of elements of pre-Soviet, Soviet and modern historiography of the experience; the method of periodization of the historical process allowing us to characterize the historiographical legacy in the context of the emergence and development of the defining schools of thought, inherent in the individual chronological segments.
Results. The author studied the historiography of governors’ reports relating to the entire period of their study and compared separate areas in chronological and narrative dynamics. The researcher identified and analyzed key aspects of the dis-cussion, as well as determined the prospects for studying the governors’ reports to develop a perspective of history of Russia in XIX – early XX centuries.
Conclusions. The study of the Governor’s report should continue in accordance with a broad thematic applicability of this source. There is a need to expand the analysis of the reports being a documentary multi-level complex. Quite promising seems a direction of further spread of geographical study of regional peculiarities of preparation and submission of governors’ reports.
